My Love-Hate Relationship with Apple

I admit that I have a love/hate relationship with Apple. I love iPhoto and how well it works with my Canon Powershot G2 (digital camera). Same goes for iTunes/iPod and iMovie/our Sony DV camera. I hate how slow my Powerbook is (667 MHz, 1 GB RAM). I hate that iTunes and iPhoto will just "quit working" sometimes and I have to backup/re-import in order to get things working again. I love the look of OS X and hate the fact that the machine has a 1-button mouse. Don't get me wrong, I love/hate things about Windows/Linux too, but I have an intense desire to really love Macs. Mine just keeps disappointing me.

Twice now, I've thought I lost all my photos and music - errors like "we've lost all your data" and "can't read file that was working 2 minutes ago" stare at me with a smirk and a middle finger. The data I have in iTunes and iPhoto is the most valuable data I have. I could lose the hard drive on my Windows box and not be that disappointed, but the Mac - whoof! Pictures of Abbie, all my CDs I've imported, we're talking 10 GB of kick ass data!!

Apple Music Store Last night, I hated OS X since iTunes flipped me off and I spent an hour+ getting it back. This morning, I fell in love again as I bought my first album (Def Leppard, Hysteria) from the Apple Music Store. Man that was easy. I've been meaning to stop by Best Buy and get a couple new CDs. Now it's possible in under 30 seconds without leaving my keyboard monkey role. Sweet!

I'm going to have to leave Mini-me at home during vacation though - I don't want to have a fight while I'm trying to enjoy Montana. Our flight leaves at 8:30 tonight, so don't expect any updates until next Tuesday. I'll be taking lots of pictures (the 512MB flash card that Abbie got me for Christmas will be a big help). Happy 4th - don't blow off any fingers.

Sorry your laptop is such a pain. Losing that stuff is the worst. Allen's G4 has been fantastic. Only the 3rd party stuff has required system upgrades (even when they claimed they didn't need it). Most of all, thanks for supporting Itunes and Apple Store. They are now talking to CDBaby.com to get independent artists' music on Itunes. Holy Cow, wouldn't that be incredible. Latest I heard was Itunes at 5million downloads...

Too bad you've had those problems. I just got back from our mailbox, picking up a brand new 12" iBook. This is to replace our "kitchen" computer, which was a 3 year old Sony VAIO 12" (as you can see, size is what we're after here). After attending WWDC, I was that much more psyched on Mac's, and they had a discount available to attendees, so I utilized that. I'm typing this right now on a 15" Ti Powerbook, and there is a G4 desktop to my left (well, and a Linux and WinXP box to my right, and an XP box over next to the G4) - so you can see I cover all platforms. I love the Mac for almost any non-developer stuff, but I've been growing to like it as a dev box too. It's sort of like working on Linux but with a much better desktop (but not as good performance). OSX I think is not the speediest, but it's just plain nice to work on, and there is that magical Apple flavor to it that somehow keeps one riveted. I have 25GB in my iTunes collection, and it's not backed up yet :( I better get crackin' on that. I also love the iTunes music store, and hope to see all the independent music come in. I've only bought about 10 songs so far (no full CD's/albums yet), but I have a big long list of stuff I want that isn't available - yet I haven't had a chance to go out and buy it either (and am secretly waiting for it to show up on the iTunes Music Store :)

A 667MHz PowerBook is loads faster than a 1GHz Intel laptop. I know you'll say that Intel laptops are now up to 2GHz, but the 1GHz PowerBook still blows them away. It's amazing what 1MB of level 3 cache does...and the 17" screen is awesome. As far as your 1 button mouse.....go buy a 3-button mouse. I have had Macs for years and haven't used a 1 button mouse since OSX was in developer preview. As far as apps crashing...well, welcome to the world of computing. Backup your files to CDR or DVDR. I've actually had a LOT less problem with Apple's apps than with most Windows apps in similar tasks. At least a love/hate relationship is better than a hate/hate relationship...which is what I have with Windows. It's nice to see you're into OSX these days Matt. We should get together sometime....I'm up in Fort Collins (are you still in Denver?). PS - I hope this is the Matt Raible I know. :-)

Vince - I believe you about the speed. A lot of my speed-frustration is probably an unfair comparison as I'm comparing a laptop to my Windows/Linux desktops - but still!! I have a 3 button mouse, but it's a pain to plug it in - I'm getting used to the one button now, and I actually (unconsciously) CTRL + click on Windows laptops now. ;0)

I do like OS X, and I'd probably like it better if I sat down and learned more about it. My fear when apps crash is exemplified by a sense of hopelessnes. I've only worked with OS X as a hobby since January 2002 - and I often think I won't be able to get my data back. I got M$ certified long ago and I can resurrect a Windows machine from near death, so when an app/data crashes on Windows, I chuckle and fix.

I'm still in Denver, and yes, this is the Matt Raible you know... ;-)
