10+ YEARS

Over 10 years ago, I wrote my first blog post. Since then, I've authored books, had kids, traveled the world, found Trish and blogged about it all.

It's so easy to use, it doesn't even feel like work

Today I spent the whole day at my client doing training on the app I've been writing since November. The app is for posting jobs, entering resumes and screening applicants. It was originally created using Struts Resume and is in synch with the latest AppFuse code. It's been a fun app to develop and now that development is winding down, user training is beginning. When the head of HR was leaving the room today, she said something that made my day.

"It's so easy to use, it doesn't even feel like work."

There's nothing quite like compliments from a client. grin

Happy Anniversary Julie!

Today is Julie and I's 4-year anniversary. It's hard to believe that 4 years has gone by so fast. That's part of the reason I started this weblog - so I'd be able to document my life and know exactly what I was thinking on a certain date. Unfortunately, if I look back, I'll probably just see that (most of the time), a new Hibernate release came out. ;-)

I couldn't ask for a better wife or mother of my children. She really is the one for me and I couldn't be a luckier guy. Just for kicks, here's a picture on our wedding day. The funny thing is the picture is from exactly 4 years, 15 minutes ago. We got married at 5 p.m. EDT, and I suspect this picture was taken around 5:45. We'll be celebrating tonight with a babysitter and a nice dinner out.

Will men become obsolete?

Julie made a predication last night - men will become obsolete in 100 years. Women just won't need them anymore. On Google News today, I found this article: Males Not Needed; Mouse Born from Unfertilized Egg. Could she be right? If the world were full of women, and the male gender died off, I'm willing to bet the human race would perish shortly after from worrying so much. ;-)

Done speaking for awhile

I'm sitting in Julie's mom's house in West Palm right now, trying to report a little about this past week before I go offline for the weekend. If you're interested, you can read about my talks on AppFuse on my SourceBeat blog. The next time I speak about AppFuse it'll be in Colorado in June. I'm scheduled for the Denver JUG that month, and I've been asked to do Boulder's JUG as well. I hope to use that week as a personal deadline for having Sitemesh and WebWork2 as options in AppFuse. I might not be able to pull it off though. I talked to the current owner of my new hobby and it sounds like I'll be driving the bus from San Diego to Denver in the near future. It's got a brand new engine with plenty of power - which is enough inspiration fo me. I've asked my Dad and he sounded interested in joining me for Raible Road Trip #8. The first part of June seems like a great time to embark on this trip. Maybe I'll do it the week after my DJUG preso.

I definitely enjoyed the MySQL Conference, but it wouldn't have been the same without Anthony and Mark. BTW Mark - you need to start a blog. Mark had one session where he told us about 10 or so parameters that you can use to print out debugging information for MySQL's JDBC Driver. I asked him to send me his presentation so I could document them here, but I'm still waiting. It might be a while though - the MySQL company meeting is in Cancun all next week. Mark gets to work full-time out of his house and then lives it up whenever he gets together with his co-workers. Rough life, eh?

Meeting Anthony was a real treat too. He's one of those no-computer-science-degree kind of guys (like Bruce and I), which always makes for fun conversation. The only problem was I couldn't get him to shut up about Python and scripting my Actions all week long. It's like he's in some sort of Python/Beanshell cult or something.

Today, I skipped all conference sessions and opted for a day at Sea World with Julie, Abbie and Julie's Mom Stephanie. It was a great time and Abbie was amazed by all the cool animals. Now I'm ready for a sunny, family-filled, relaxing weekend in West Palm. I'll try to post some pictures if I get around to it.

DU in Frozen Four

You can tell that NCAA Hockey isn't nearly as popular as other sports - i.e. basketball or football. Today, the "Frozen Four" begins and DU (my Alma Mater) is in it for the first time in almost 20 years. How can you tell its not that popular? Because the first game started at 10:00 this morning! On a Thursday?! Let's hope they win - then maybe we'll get a prime-time game where we can actually watch them. Go DU!

Chimney Gulch Trail

This trail is out near Golden and basically just winds up Lookout Mountain. It started sprinkling on us about halfway up and turned into sheets of rain when we got to the top. A great ride to say the least.

[Construction] Foundation is finished

Last week, Bob the Builder finished the foundation for our new addition. Below are some pics. Nothing has changed (so far) this week - but I expect to see a floor pretty soon.

Snowing...

Just when I got my office and network all setup and I was getting ready to start hauling the last bits over - it starts snowing. This is typical in Denver. One day it's 80 degrees, the next it snows. I've seen it happen in the same day. In college, I once went to a movie when it was 75 degrees out, and when I left there was 2 inches of snow on the ground.

My new office is about 1/3 of the size of my old one - so it's kinda cramped in here - but I do have a window seat. Now I can watch it snow - which is huge compared to the dungeon/basement I used to be in. It'll suck when it's a beautiful day and I'm stuck working - but that's what getting up at 4 a.m. is for - done by noon!

Unfortunately, we get to do this all over again in 6-9 months. Next time it'll be a lot worse since we'll be +1 family member. Oh well, at least it's only next door. It's kinda cool moving from a small house (675 sq. ft.) to a bigger one (900 sq. ft.) and then to an even bigger one (1700 sq. ft.).

Moving

We started moving yesterday afternoon - and we're almost done. It sure is convenient simply moving into the house next door. Four good friends showed up around happy hour and helped us out for a couple hours. Kitchen, living room and both bedrooms are done. The only thing that remains is my office, desk, networking, etc. Phone and Internet transition was extremely smooth (Comcast rocks!). It all happened yesterday and we only had about an hour outage on each. I got my wireless network setup quickly and was able to use the neighbors (strong reception upstairs) when it was out. I'm dreading office setup, but I'd better get on it. You'll know when I'm done b/c demo.raibledesigns.com will be back up.

BTW, did you know that Eclipse 3.0 M8 is out? I wonder when MyEclipse will support it?
