10+ YEARS

Over 10 years ago, I wrote my first blog post. Since then, I've authored books, had kids, traveled the world, found Trish and blogged about it all.

Blogroll Cleanup

It's time to update my blogroll with the sites I'm actually reading now. I still click on the links on my blogroll every-so-often, but there are some that are hardly ever updated. See ya, it was fun reading when you provided regular content. ;-)

Moblogger works with Roller!

I did some testing with Russ's Moblogger this morning and it works great with Roller! I haven't tested attaching images, but sending a plain text message worked like a charm. The hardest part was setting up the e-mail address. I'll try to document my setup procedures tonight for other Roller users.

Hopefully, I'll be setting this up on this site so I can post with my T68i. What does that give me? Nothing, absolutely nothing - simply the ability to post 1 liners or something like that. Of course, I could also be motivated to get the phone's camera - that might make it a little more worthwhile. Good excuse for new gadget. I dig the software/idea - thanks Russ!

Roller's Wiki - where's the RSS Feed?

I noticed that on JSPWiki's demo site there's an RSS feed. So my question is, why isn't here one for Roller? http://www.ecyrd.com/JSPWiki/rss.rdf works for JSPWiki, but a similar URL (http://www.rollerweblogger.org/wiki/rss.rdf) doesn't work for Roller. Is the Roller Wiki an older version that doesn't have this feature.

Speaking of Roller, I've updated this site to cache everything to disk, rather than in memory. Hopefully this will result in a more stable site.

Spotted: Nice Roller Theme

I stumbed upon the :: Introspection :: blog this morning, written by Jeff Haynie. I really dig Jeff's theme, and that's the reason for this post. Jeff - any chance you want to donate that sucker to Roller's out-of-the-box themes collection?

Dominic is Back!

Welcome back Dominic - good to see you back online! He's got a new hosting provider that seems to have a pretty sweet deal going too.

Cool Log Analyzer: AWStats

Both Jeff and Anthony provide us with a tip to look at AWStats.

AWStats is a short for Advanced Web Statistics. It's a free tool that generates advanced web (but also ftp or mail) server access statistics graphically. This log analyzer works as a CGI or from command line and shows you all possible information your log contains, in few graphical web pages.

This package looks very cool - and it's free, Free, FREE! I wonder if I can get my ISP to replace my existing stats software with this one.

Roller Development Sidelined

Unfortunately, I won't be working on Roller tonight like I'd hoped. It's 9:30 right now and I'm just finishing up my first release at the new job. I'd rather not pull an all-nighter after working a 50-hour week in 4 days. Ugh - I'm burnt. Good to be done though - and the customers here (internal) are really excited about using a webapp to do their jobs.

Sorry Roller, you're going to have to wait a while for my features. I'm planning on taking my PowerBook, but I won't promise anything. The last time I took it on a trip and tried to get some work done - it was brutal. I was up until 6:00 a.m. trying to finish my first release for the last project I was on. I gave up and slept for an hour - hoping to finish it up on the plane. Needless to say, I suck developing on a Mac and it took me all the way until Monday morning to release. The client was furious and the project almost ended right then and there. I tried to quit, but they wouldn't let me.

It's kinda funny that it's been almost a year since then, and I'm in the same situation again. Luckily, I finished before my plane took off this time! I wish I could work on ya Roller, but I need a vacation... Phew - off to Florida!

Another E-Mail to Blog Project

I found that someone else is doing an e-mail to blog project. Probably something to keep our eyes on for GeekBlog and Roller. BTW - does any blogging software support this? Maybe we can sponge some ideas of an existing implementation. My latest idea is to use digital certificates for authentication. Should work, right? Check out digital certificates from Thawte - there's even a link to get your FREE personal email certificate. I'll bite.

From GeekBlog - New Ideas for Roller

Looking at this list of features that GeekBlog plans to add - I can't help but smile. I especially like the following:

Allow posting entries via EMail from weblogauthor

The best part - it's open source, so we *should* be able to copy the feature into Roller. At least I hope so. Since GeekBlog and Roller are both Java-based apps, and both are open-source, it sure would be cool to copy/borrow features from each other to make two very robuts weblogging apps.

New Themes for Roller?

Cool Aqua Theme I like Bryan Bell's new theme, and I really dig this aqua theme. Think I can do this in Roller? Of course, it's just HTML and CSS. Do you think it's possible to fix the theme's problems in IE6? I do - anything is possible. Sure would be cool - new themes for Roller that you can install in seconds. Sometimes it's more fun to think of new ideas for Roller than to actually implement them. However, the satisfaction of implementing dreams is awesome - and something that I strive to enjoy every week. I have Julie and Abbie - a dream I had as a kid - and now I'm loving life... smile
