Awesome weekend in Michigan

This weekend was a blast. I flew up to Grand Rapids, Michigan for a good friend's wedding on Friday. The wedding was near Ludington, which is right on Lake Michigan. It was a beautiful resort-town, where the water was warm, the sun shining and the beer ice cold.

It was a great trip, but after being stuck in Chicago's O'Hare airport last night - I hope I don't have to travel again for a while. At one point, the United flight to Denver had 143 people on the standby list! After a little Motel 6 4-hours-of-sleep action last night, I got on the 6:30 a.m. flight and made it back to Denver this morning.

Matt,

Ludington is indeed a great place for a weekend trip. My wife's family has vacationed there for decades, and we are going up there the weekend after next for a short vacation (It's the Air and Water show here next weekend, can't miss the TBirds on the lake front...that's another thing you'll have to come experience sometime).

Ludington is one of those nice "sit around and do nothing but enjoy nature and the family" kind of places. My wife's uncle has a little house up there, which is perfect when you bring the family...dealing with a 2.5 year and 7 month old in a hotel room can be a hassle.

I honestly think that the state park there is one of the nicest in the country. Did you get a chance to check that out?

We might have crossed paths last night. I was sitting at C28 waiting to fly standby. I had a confirmed flight at 10:00 @ C10. Indeed, O'hare was nuts last night. I've been making my way thru the day with only a few hours of sleep too. Small world....

I lost respect for United when I went out to JavaOne, both there and back, flights were delayed and in once case, we ended up sitting on the plane at the gate for 2 hours.

Matt (and fellow Michigan lovers)

Funny you should mention Ludington. Our family has a beach cottage in Pentwater, which is the next town 15 miles south of Ludington. Back in the 40's my great grandparents bought some beach front property North of town and it's been in the family ever since. Since I was a kid we have gone every year. Pentwater a little smaller and more touristy than Ludington. (so we usually go up to Ludington for groceries and restaraunts).

Funny, because I live in San Diego now and the beach in that area and up the coast of Michigan is WAY nicer than most of the beaches here. Certainly less crowded and less polluted than San Diego beaches. Of course you can't surf... and winter would be a different story. But it's much more nautical in Michigan. Every town seems to have a channel with a small inland lake and a boating marina. Michigan is a well kept secret... hope I'm not telling too many people here.

Where did your friends get married? Do they have family in Ludington or something?

Mark - unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to check out the state park; the weekend was packed with wedding activities.

Peter - my friends got married at the bride's parent's house 20 miles east of Ludington (so yeah, she grew up there). The reception was at a country club in Ludington.
