The Bug Rescue Road Trip
In the evening hours of Friday, August 14th, I was scrolling through Facebook when a vintage red bug caught my attention. Trish and I have had our eye out for a red classic VW for a while, and this one was pretty sweet. It sent tingles down my spine within seconds of reading the listing. It was a 1959 ragtop with a beautiful paint job and a newer engine.
Our only desire for another VW was that it be red, because of billiard balls. Hefe has a yellow 1 ball for a gear shifter, and Stout has a blue 2. We wanted another classic to take the red 3. We'd considered a Baja bug and a nice Thing over the years, but never purchased anything.
I sent the Facebook Marketplace listing to Trish. She said "BUY it!" I didn't waste any time messaging the seller and making an offer. He responded quickly, I sent him a deposit, and we made arrangements to meet in Phoenix, Arizona, in September. I saved the listing for posterity, and you can see our text conversation that sealed the deal at the bottom.
When I bought my '66 bus in 2004, my Dad and I drove it back from San Diego. When we bought our '90 Syncro in 2013, Trish and I drove it back from Sun Valley, Idaho. It seemed fitting that we drive this VW back from Phoenix.
