10+ YEARS

Over 10 years ago, I wrote my first blog post. Since then, I've authored books, had kids, traveled the world, found Trish and blogged about it all.

Now sporting valid XHTML

Thanks to Will Gayther (no blog that I know of), this site now validates as XHTML 1.0 Transitional. You might recall that I had issues with the onload attribute of an iframe, but it was easily solved. Will suggested I put the onload into the <body> of my iframe's "src" document, but that seemed impossible, as the iframe doesn't have a source document - it's just submitted to. But he did turn me onto the solution. There is a function called when the form is submitted (onSubmitComments()), so I just called the function from there (instead of in the onload):

function onSubmitComments(aEntryId)
{
  gSubmittingComment = aEntryId;
  setTimeout("onCommentSubmitted()", 500); // wait 1/2 second
}

I don't expect you to care about any of this, just wanted to let you know I'm compliant again - or at least right now I am. Oh yeah, and I added this theme (sunsets) to Roller's CVS yesterday.

Struts: How to use Indexed Properties

James Turner has written a short-n-sweet article on using indexed properties with DynaForms. Of course, you could use any ol' ActionForm, but you get the idea. If you're struggling with indexed properties in Struts, or you're just curious to know what they are, read this article (estimated time 5-10 minutes, 6 printed pages - mostly code).

Now if we could only convince James to use XHTML (lower case HTML, close your tags, etc.) in his examples. wink A big pet-peeve of mine is uppercase HTML - XHTML is lowercase and HTML works just the same with lowercase tag names/attributes. Here's to future compatibility!

Issues I'm having with XP and Red Hat

I got everything setup as needed yesterday, and I'm thoroughly enjoying my seemingly new Windows box. However, I can't get at my data. My data is on my old hard drive and I can't seem to get Windows to recognize it as needed, though it works great as the primary disk. I've posted a question with my issue on experts-exchange.com, so hopefully I'll have it fixed soon enough.

My second issue is very minor. I'm adding a 2nd hard drive to my Red Hat 9 machine, and I'm curious to know where you Linux gurus mount a 2nd hard drive? I currently have it mounted as an NTFS drive at /mnt/windows, thanks to the Linux-NTFS Project. But now I want to format it as a Linux filesystem and share it via Samba.

My third issue is a little wierd. I have Samba setup and running, but I can't login to any of the shared directories. The username/password dialog just keeps prompting me (from my Windows machines). I could probably figure out the problem if I spent more than 10 minutes looking for an answer - but alas, I have not.

Windows is running super fast though, and that makes me happy.

Feeling the love

Thanks to Erik for choosing me as one of his favorite Java bloggers. That's quite a compliment in my book - especially from one of my favorite bloggers.

Since it's Friday, here's a mp3little reminder.

Changing Struts' bean:message to JSTL's fmt:message

I converted AppFuse to use JSTL's <fmt:message> tag instead of Struts' <bean:message> tags this morning. It was pretty easy. Here's the steps I took:

1. First, I added the following to metadata/web/seb-settings.xml:

<!-- Define the basename for a resource bundle for I18N -->
<context-param>
    <param-name>javax.servlet.jsp.jstl.fmt.localizationContext</param-name>
    <param-value>ApplicationResources</param-value>
</context-param>

2. Then I added the format tag to web/common/taglibs.jsp:

<%@ taglib uri="http://java.sun.com/jstl/fmt" prefix="fmt" %>

3. Finally, I did find/replace with <bean:message/<fmt:message.

4. I also had to change my title and header keys in web/WEB-INF/tiles-config.xml to remove the . from the bean names. In other words, I converted title.key and heading.key to titleKey and headingKey and also made the appropriate changes in web/layouts/baseLayout.jsp.

Easy as Pie!

RE: .Mac Bookmarks

.Mac Bookmarks seems like a good idea. I tried it, and it is cool, but it's not what I'm looking for. I have enough open windows as it is - another one only makes it more difficult. I need my bookmarks to be a part of my browser, like they currently are. That's what I like. What I want is the ability to specify a URL to my bookmarks.html file. My favorite browsers, Firebird and Camino both use a local bookmarks.html file, so this would work perfectly. I don't need bookmarks when I'm not on the net, so there would be no issues (for me) with connectivity.

I got the tip off for .Mac Bookmarks from Erik.

Good Presos from TSS Symposium

I found a few good presentations in my Inbox today. I read them. Usually I don't. I enjoyed them, especially Mike's. I think WW2 looks promising, and I expect that I will try it soon. I predict that I will like it and I will be enthusiastic about it. Many hours will be lost exploring it's codebase and questioning it's authors. Julie will long for me to come to bed, but I will stay up and educate myself. This doesn't sound like any fun at the moment. So I will control my curiousity for another day. Hopefully I can control it for another month or year.

My Love-Hate Relationship with Apple

I admit that I have a love/hate relationship with Apple. I love iPhoto and how well it works with my Canon Powershot G2 (digital camera). Same goes for iTunes/iPod and iMovie/our Sony DV camera. I hate how slow my Powerbook is (667 MHz, 1 GB RAM). I hate that iTunes and iPhoto will just "quit working" sometimes and I have to backup/re-import in order to get things working again. I love the look of OS X and hate the fact that the machine has a 1-button mouse. Don't get me wrong, I love/hate things about Windows/Linux too, but I have an intense desire to really love Macs. Mine just keeps disappointing me.

Twice now, I've thought I lost all my photos and music - errors like "we've lost all your data" and "can't read file that was working 2 minutes ago" stare at me with a smirk and a middle finger. The data I have in iTunes and iPhoto is the most valuable data I have. I could lose the hard drive on my Windows box and not be that disappointed, but the Mac - whoof! Pictures of Abbie, all my CDs I've imported, we're talking 10 GB of kick ass data!!

Apple Music Store Last night, I hated OS X since iTunes flipped me off and I spent an hour+ getting it back. This morning, I fell in love again as I bought my first album (Def Leppard, Hysteria) from the Apple Music Store. Man that was easy. I've been meaning to stop by Best Buy and get a couple new CDs. Now it's possible in under 30 seconds without leaving my keyboard monkey role. Sweet!

I'm going to have to leave Mini-me at home during vacation though - I don't want to have a fight while I'm trying to enjoy Montana. Our flight leaves at 8:30 tonight, so don't expect any updates until next Tuesday. I'll be taking lots of pictures (the 512MB flash card that Abbie got me for Christmas will be a big help). Happy 4th - don't blow off any fingers.

GoogleAds

Reading Russ mentioning GoogleAds in his blog got me thinking ... i get a lot of referers from google searches so i was thinking let's see if i can get this site to be accepted. Since the rules to get accepted are not disclosed it is a bit of a gamble. [Werner Ramaekers Weblog]

Hmmm, I wonder if I could qualify? I wonder if it's possible (in Roller) to only display these ads when a user is coming from Google. I don't want to spam all my readers with GoogleAds, but if someone is coming from Google - I don't mind. Ideas appreciated.
