Installing/Configuring Apache and Tomcat

I found Galatea Flashguides at this early morning hour (2:30 a.m.) while watching Abbie and trying to keep her entertained so Julie can get some sleep. Looks like a great site for how to's for installing Apache, Tomcat, JOnAS, and Cocoon.

Struts Kick Start

Kevin Bedell and James Turner have setup Struts Kick Start; A site devoted to discussion and support of the Struts web application platform, centered around the SAMS book.

Tomorrow night at the Denver Java User Group, Sue Spielman explains how to use Struts to build Enterprise Applications. I think I know most of what will be presented, but it never hurts to attend a Java User Group meeting. We'll have to see how Abbie and Mom feels about Daddy taking off for a few hours (Julie has the flu, so I doubt I'll make it). I actually contacted Sue a few weeks back about contracting prospects. She responded quickly and opportunities seemed promising after exchanging a couple of e-mails. But alas, I haven't heard from her since.

The First Week

Abbie is already a Gators Fan! The first week has been awesome! Abbie is the best baby. I have to admit that I don't know many newborns, but from what my friends/family has told me - the first few weeks home with the baby are hell. They said she would be crying all night, we'd have massive sleep deprivation and our lives would be changed for ever. They were right that our lives would be changed forever, but mostly because we're such proud parents and we love our daughter so much. She's been sleeping for 3 hours, waking up, feeding and then falling asleep again. The only time she gets crabby is when Julie goes to bed and it's my turn to take care of her. Then she tries to nurse on me, which doesn't work too well. Thank God for pacifiers - that saves me when I'm trying to convince Abber not to yell at me. I've been getting a full nights sleep every night, but that's because Julie is breastfeeding and gets up every 3 hours to nurse. Soon we'll be filling some extra bottles so I can join in the midnight/3am feedings - that should be fun. You might be seeing some late-night-posts then.

Grammy (Julie's mom) and Aunt Holly (Julie's sister) are in town this weekend, and have given us lots of love by stocking our fridge and changing Abbie's diaper. One of my best friends, Kevin Navarro, also came over last night and cooked us some of the best tostadas I've ever had!

Thanks to Everyone

The blogging community is great, or at least the guy's blogs that I read. You know who you are. To everyone who's offered congratulations and given our daughter compliments (are you hitting on her already?!) - your thoughts and words are much appreciated. It's always fun to see your name in lights. Here's your names right back at ya (in no particular order) - you guys are great: Dave, Lance, Russell, Greg, Jeff, Rick, Anthony, Dominic, and Erik.

If I missed your name, let me know, because I might not be reading your blog, and I certainly should be. Kudos go to Russell for the first post and my friend Brian Burke (no blog yet), both who guessed that we were giving birth from the lack of a Monday posting.

Our Little Girl has Arrived!

Abigail's Birth Announcement

Proud parents Matt and Julie are doing great and loving life! Abbie is an awesome little girl and is making this parenting stuff look easy. Of course, we've only had one night so far - so I'm sure she'll get rowdy here pretty soon.

We thought today was the day!

Julie woke me up at 5:30 this morning to say she'd been in labor since 3:00 a.m. She'd taken a shower and was heading out to get some donuts because she was very hungry. Her contractions were 10 minutes apart and he due date 4 days away (November 7th). So we went to King Sooper's, got some donuts and other goodies, and came back home. We both thought today was the day for sure. So Julie went to back to bed to rest up for the big event, and I packed the car. When she woke up 3 hours later, her contractions had died down to about one per hour. It's 5:00 p.m. now and we're heading out to dinner - but the enthusiasm has definitely died down. She talked me into painting the living room today and it doesn't look like we're going to have a birthday today. But you never know, those contractions could kick back in at any moment!

First Snow

View from our backyard This view is what we woke up to this morning. Julie cringed and moaned, while I yelled "yeeee haaawww!" It motivated me to buy my ski pass for this year and I can't wait for my first 9" day...

How to get it all done?

Reading Russell's post tonight about "that middle place" makes me feel good - there are others with brains that work too much.

I have too many options. I have too many things to learn/do/create.

This is how I feel about getting my Photoshop certification, upgrading my other certifications, adding search features to roller, raking the leaves, selling my car and being prepared to drop it all at a moments notice when Julie goes into labor. I often find that when I give myself a list of tasks like this, it's out of boredom rather than necessity. None of these are necessary (except for the last), but they are things that I'd like to do to accomplish before the end of the year. My best luck with studying for certifications has been: wake up early, usually at 4 or 5 and go to work early to study. This is tough when you work at home like me. There are too many distractions at home, or anywhere in the vicinity of a computer. Best to go to a library or conference room and study for an hour or two each day. So what I'm advocating is: 1) put yourself on a studying schedule, and 2) make time to study away from home.

I've got all this stuff I want to do and learn, and there's only 24 hours in the day and I've got to sleep for what, 3 of them at least (hahaha. Oh how I WISH I could function on 3 hours sleep). I really need to learn to UNPLUG the internet and sometimes UNPLUG the computer so I can get the stuff I need to done...

So true, I'm really looking forward to UNPLUGGING in the coming weeks.

Which digital camera to buy?

Canon PowerShot G2 I'm lucky enough to have talked my wife into accepting a digital camera as a birth gift, now to decide which one? BTW, did you guys buy your wives a "birth gift" or am I getting hoodwinked? Anyway, I've read the reviews on pcmag.com and cnet.com and have come to the conclusion that the Canon PowerShot G2 is the one for us. Why? It seems to be getting rave reviews, it's the most popular and the prices I'm finding seem to be a bargain compared to what it's suggested retail price is ($900). And the sample photos are exactly the quality I'm looking for. One issue is that it seems to be discontinued. My problem now? Julie doesn't want me to spend $500 on a camera, especially when we're about to downgrade to a one-income household. Is there a solution - should I buy one off eBay?
