Life as an Open Source Developer, One Year Later

It's been a little over a year since I wrote about life as an open source developer. I'm happy to say I still haven't written a single line of proprietary code. Of course, things have changed a lot in the last year. I thought going full-time would bring stability to my career. Instead, six months into it we joined forces with Okta.

The transition was rough at first. At Stormpath, we had full-featured SDKs and a great relationship with developers that used our service. We were able to port many of our SDKs to work with Okta, but we discovered that Okta didn't have a great relationship with developers. In fact, their developer blog hadn't been updated in over a year when we arrived.

On the upside, Okta's API supported standards like SAML, OAuth, and OpenID Connect. Open standards made it possible to use other frameworks and not have to rely on our own. I was pumped to find that Spring Security made it easy to integrate with SAML and OAuth. In fact, I was able to leverage these standards to add OIDC support to JHipster.

Okta's new developer console and open pricing are just a couple examples of improved happenings since we arrived. The Okta Spring Boot Starter and JavaScript libraries for Node.js, Angular, and React are also pretty awesome.

I'm happy to say my contributions on GitHub almost doubled in the last year!

As far as stress is concerned, that hasn't changed much. I've learned that the stress I feel from work is still causing me to have high blood pressure. When I measure it in the mornings, or at night, it's fine. When I measure it during the day, it's elevated. I believe my high blood pressure is caused by doing too much. Sure, it's great to be productive and accomplish a lot for my company, but it's killing me.

Therein lies the rub. I get to create my job. All I'm asked to do is write a blog post per week and speak at a conference (or meetup) once a month. Yet I'm doing way more than that. Since this time last year, I've delivered 33 presentations, in 13 different cities. I keep a page on this blog updated with all my presentations.

Next year, I still plan to speak a lot, but I plan on toning things down a bit. I'll be concentrating on US cities, with large Java user groups, and I'll be limiting my travel overseas.

Matt the Hipster Outside of my health concerns, I'm still loving my job. The fact that I get paid to speak at great conferences, write example applications, and discover new ways to do things is awesome. It's also pretty sweet that I was able to update the JHipster Mini-Book and upgrade 21-Points Health during work hours. The fact that I got featured on the main Okta blog was pretty cool too.

The good news is my overseas travel isn't done this year. Today, I leave for Devoxx Belgium, one of my favorite conferences. It'll be my first time in Antwerp without Trish. However, I'm speaking with friends Josh Long and Deepu Sasidharan, so it's sure to be a good time. Traveling to Devoxx Morocco should be fun too. I've never been to Casablanca before.

In December, you can catch me at SpringOne and The Rich Web Experience. Next year, I'll be speaking at Denver Microservices meetup, Utah JUG, Seattle JUG, and JazzCon. I plan to do a JUG tour in the northeast US too.

You might've noticed I don't write a lot of technical content here anymore. That's because I'm doing most of my writing on developer.okta.com/blog. I'm still writing for InfoQ as well. I really enjoyed attending the JavaOne keynotes and writing up what I saw.

I'll leave you with this, a project I'm working on actively and plan to finish before Devoxx Morocco.

How do I become a programmer?

Yesterday, I received a message from a friend, asking about how to become a programmer. It's not the first time I've been asked this. In fact, this summer I've been asked by several friends how to get into the field. It seems that as people grow older, they see the lifestyle of working remotely and enjoying their job as an attractive thing to do. In yesterday's case, this friend is a mom that now has her days free because all her kids are in school. Here's what she wrote:

Now that my girls are both in school full day, I've been thinking about taking some programming classes. It's something I started to do while I was working at [ABC Company], but obviously didn't pursue once I quit to have kids. I'm thinking of getting my MIS in web development or specializing in designing apps if that's even a thing? Anyway, what languages would you recommend I concentrate on? JavaScript, Python? Lastly, is there a particular school you would recommend? I can't afford DU on my stay-at-home-mom salary, or even Regis which is where I started when I was getting tuition reimbursement. I was hoping I could do most of my education online while the kids are in school? Any advice or words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated!

Since this is a common question I see, I figured I'd publish my answers here, and get some advice from y'all too. Here's my response:

Python would definitely be good, as would JavaScript. JavaScript can be done on the client and server these days, so you could do that and be able to do front-end and backend development.

For programming specifically, I've heard these guys have a good JavaScript course: https://www.codecademy.com. Here's how to get started with Python in eight weeks: http://lifehacker.com/how-i-taught-myself-to-code-in-eight-weeks-511615189. And one of my favorites: http://programming-motherfucker.com/become.html.

I've taken a Scala course from Coursera, it was hard and intense, but I learned a lot. They have lots of courses and give you certifications you can put on your LinkedIn profile: https://www.coursera.org.

I've also recommended https://teamtreehouse.com to folks and https://www.khanacademy.org has always been good, even for kids.

Ultimately, the best way to learn to code is by doing. It's definitely good to study, learn and practice, but it'll probably won't sink in and become real knowledge until you're getting paid to do it. With the plethora of high-priced programmers out there, you can likely find a junior position, show a willingness to learn and come up to speed quickly. If you can couple that with a remote position, I think you'll really enjoy yourself.

Her response was interesting, as she thought she might need a CS degree to even get a programming job.

Coincidentally I looked over many of these coding sites yesterday but wasn't sure if I needed an accredited diploma. It sounds like it's more important that I just get some experience.

From my experience, a college degree matters, but not a CS degree. I told her people skills make programmers stand out and she's a witty person that certainly has those. What's your advice as a programmer? What would you tell people to do if they want to break into the field?

More importantly, if you're on the hiring side, what would it take for you to hire a 40-something person with no programming background? If they've been studying for six months and have really good people skills, would you hire them for a junior position?

Setting up a Minecraft Server in the Cloud

Minecraft My 10-year-old son, Jack, is a huge fan of Minecraft. If you let him, he'd play all day, skipping meals and having a blast. It's most fun to hear him playing with his sister or his best friend. I'm amazed it's captured his attention for so long; well over two years. Both my kids loved it when Scott Davis taught a Devoxx4Kids Denver class on Server-side Minecraft programming.

We haven't had any Devoxx4Kids Denver workshops this year, but that's about to change. First of all, I'm happy to announce we're working with the Rocky Mountain Oracle Users Group to have a Day of Family Coding Fun at Elitch Gardens this Friday. There will be a workshop on Raspberry Pi and I'll be doing a demonstration on how to setup a Minecraft Server in the cloud. Next weekend, we'll be doing a more in-depth Minecraft Workshop at Devoxx4Kids Denver. If you'd like to join us please RSVP. Since having your own Minecraft Server is a fun thing for kids, and useful for parents, I figured I'd document how to do it here.

Developing Services with Apache Camel - Part I: The Inspiration

In early May, my client asked me to work on a project migrating from IBM Message Broker 6.1 to an open source solution. Their reason was simple, the IBM solution was end of life and outdated. To prove how out of date it was, the Windows version required Windows XP to run. IBM WebSphere Message Broker has been replaced by IBM Integration Bus in recent years, but no upgrade path existed.

At first, I didn't want to do the project. I was hired as a Modern Java/UI Architect and I had enjoyed my first month upgrading libraries, making recommendations and doing a bit of UI performance work. I hadn't done much with ESBs and I enjoy front-end development a lot more than backend. It took me a couple days to realize they were willing to pay me to learn. That's when I decided to clutch up, learn how to do it all, and get the job done. This article is the first in a series on what I learned during this migration project.

My approach for figuring out how everything worked was similar to working on any new application. I get the source code, install the software necessary to run it, and run it locally so I can interact with it.

This site now powered by Java 8, Tomcat 7 and Wufoo Forms

I recently upgraded this site to use the latest version of Apache Roller. It was a minor release (5.0.3), but I figured I'd document the steps in case "early onset" comes soon. First of all, to download raibledesigns.com and get it running locally, I perform the following steps:

  1. Backup everything using ~/bin/backup.sh on raibledesigns.com
  2. scp backup file to local hard drive and expand
  3. Copy ROOT, skins and repository directories to local webapps
  4. Make sure activation, mail, mysql and jta JARs are in $CATALINA_HOME/lib
  5. Copy roller-custom.properties from raibledesigns.com's $CATALINA_HOME/lib
  6. Copy context files from hosted $CATALINA_HOME/conf/Catalina to local directory
  7. Import database and change roller-custom.properties to match local credentials

Next, to upgrade to the latest Roller release, I do the following:

  1. Download latest Roller release and expand
  2. Copy JARs (from WEB-INF/lib) to existing install (to upgrade dependencies)
  3. Delete any lower-versioned JARS from WEB-INF/lib directory
  4. Copy JSPs (from WEB-INF/jsps) to existing install
  5. Run database migration scripts from WEB-INF/classes/dbscripts
  6. Use a diff tool (like SmartSynchronize) to compare new vs. existing
  7. Test and troubleshoot (if there's startup errors)

This process has worked well for the last 10 years, and it's been in my head the whole time. It's bound to escape someday.

Contact Form Enhancements
In addition to upgrading Roller, I also upgraded Tomcat 6 to Tomcat 7.0.52. In doing so, I found Jakarta's Mailer Taglib doesn't work with Tomcat 7. As you can tell from the aforementioned thread, I've known this for several years. That's the only thing that's stopped me from upgrading Tomcat the past couple years.

Integrating GWT into AppFuse

I've been interested in integrating GWT into AppFuse ever since I blogged about it 4 years ago. A few months after that post, I wrote about Enhancing Evite.com with GWT and Grails. After Evite, I had a gig near Boston where I developed with GXT for the remainder of the year. When all was said and done, I ended up spending a year with GWT and really enjoyed my experience. I haven't used it much since.

GWT is scheduled to be integrated into AppFuse in version 4.0. That's quite a ways off. The good news is you might not have to wait that long, thanks to Iván García Sainz-Aja. Iván let us know about his work a couple weeks ago in an email to the appfuse-dev mailing list.

It's still work in progress but it has already most of AppFuse functionality..

As you can imagine, I was very excited to hear about Iván's work. So I cloned his repo, built gwt-bootstrap locally and checked it out. Functionality wise, it was great! However, when I dug into the source code, I found a whole lotta code.

To see how the GWT flavor compared to the other implementations in AppFuse, I created a cloc report on the various web frameworks in AppFuse. I'm sure these reports could be adjusted to be more accurate, but I believe they give a good general overview. I posted some graphs that displays my findings in visual form.

When I sent this to the mailing list, Ivan responded that it was a lot of code and estimated 12 new files would be needed to CRUD an entity. This sure seems like a lot to me, but he defended this yesterday and noted that his implementation follows many of GWT's latest best practices: MVP pattern, Activities and Places, EventBus, Gin and Guice. He also shared a wiki page with explanations and diagrams of how things work.

The reason I'm writing this post is to get more feedback on this implementation. First of all, does GWT really require this much code? Secondly, are there other GWT implementations that reduce a lot of the boilerplate? SmartGWT, Vaadin* and Errai come to mind.

If you were starting a new GWT project and using AppFuse, how would you want it implemented?

* Vaadin 7 claims it can be used as a drop-in replacement for GWT. I tried replacing the gwt-servlet and gwt-user dependencies with Vaadin's, but it didn't work.

Installing OpenJDK 7 on OS X

Last week, I scanned an article and saw there was a Java 7 Webinar. At first, I thought Java 7 was released, but soon after realized it was a Developer Preview. Unfortunately, the download page doesn't have support for OS X. Since it took me a bit of work to figure out how to install OpenJDK 7 on OS X (I'm running Snow Leopard 10.6.7), I figured I'd write down how I did it.

I started off by downloading "OpenJDK 1.7 universal (32/64 bits) from Mac OS/X branch" from the openjdk-osx-build project's downloads (direct link). After downloading, I installed the dmg as normal.

Update Jan 27, 2012:
After installing the dmg, add the following to your ~/.profile and you should be good to go. Thanks to Mark Beaty for the tip.

Continue with the instructions below if you don't like this technique for some reason.

I don't use Java Preferences to set my JDK, instead I use David Blevin's handy setjdk script. To make this script work with JDK 7 on OS X, I had to make one minor change. On line 40, I added "Contents" to the path for JAVA_HOME:

export JAVA_HOME=$vmdir/$ver/Contents/Home

Update Jan 27, 2012: You no longer need to make this change.

From there, I had to setup some symlinks so everything would work as expected:

cd /System/Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/
sudo ln -s /Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/1.7.0.jdk

Update Jan 27, 2012: The latest version installs at a different location so the symlink command above should be changed to:

sudo ln -s /Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/1.7.0u.jdk 1.7.0.jdk

Lastly, I had my JAVA_HOME set to "/System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Home". I like the shorter (and seemingly more common) "/Library/Java/Home", so I set it back to that in my ~/.profile:

export JAVA_HOME=/Library/Java/Home

On my system, /Library/Java/Home had a symlink to /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Home, so I changed it to the CurrentJDK that Java Preferences and setjdk use.

cd /Library/Java
rm Home
ln -s /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/CurrentJDK/Contents/Home

Then I had to add a symlink for 1.7 in the Versions directory.

cd /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions
sudo ln -s /System/Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/1.7.0.jdk/Contents 1.7

After making these changes, I was able to switch to JDK 7 easily.

$ setjdk 1.7

I was also able to switch back to JDK 6.

Maven Issues
Next, I tried using JDK 7 to build AppFuse. I ran into two issues when I tried to do this. The first was caused by the native2ascii plugin, which has been known to cause issues on non-Mac platforms. Adding the following profile seemed to solve the problem.

It seemed like adding a profile that included tools.jar would solve this, but it doesn't. When I add the dependency directly to the plugin itself, I get the following error:

Integrating OAuth with AppFuse and its REST API

One of the new features in AppFuse 2.1 is an appfuse-ws archetype. This archetype leverages Enunciate and CXF to create a project with a REST API and generated HTML documentation. Enunciate is a very useful tool, allowing you to develop web services with JAX-RS and JAX-WS annotations and have all types of client libraries generated. For me, it seems very useful for developing the backend of SOFEA (a.k.a. modern) applications.

Back in March, Ryan Heaton published a nice article on Securing Web Services in an Enunciate application. I decided to take his tutorial a step further and not only secure my web services, but also to integrate with OAuth 2. In this tutorial, I'll show you how to create a new application with AppFuse WS, secure it, add OAuth support, and then use a client app to authenticate and retrieve data.

Create a New AppFuse WS Project
To begin, I visited the Create AppFuse Archetypes page and created a new application using the "Web Services Only" option in the Web Framework dropdown. Below is the command I used to create the "appfuse-oauth" project.

After doing this, I started the app using mvn jetty:run and confirmed it started OK. At this point, I was able to view the generated documentation for the application at http://localhost:8080. The screenshot below shows what the app looks like at this point.

NOTE: You might notice the REST endpoint of /{username}. This is a bug in AppFuse 2.1.0 and has been fixed in SVN. It does not affect this tutorial.

Integrate Spring Security and OAuth
I originally tried to integrate Spring Security with Enunciate's Securing Web Services Tutorial. However, it only secures endpoints and doesn't do enough filtering for OAuth support, so I ended up using a custom web.xml. I put this file in src/main/resources and loaded it in my enunciate.xml file. I also upgraded Spring Security and imported my security.xml file.

I used the OAuth for Spring Security sample apps to figure this out. In this example, I used authorizedGrantTypes="authorization_code", but you can see from the commented <oauth:client> elements above that there's a few different options. You should also note that the clientId is hard-coded to "ajax-login", signifying I only want to allow a single application to authenticate.

At this point, I'd like to give a shoutout to Ryan Heaton for creating both Enunciate and Spring Security's OAuth support. Nice work Ryan!

At this point, I needed to do a number of additional tasks to finish integrating oauth. The first was to modify the Jetty Plugin's configuration to 1) run on port 9000, 2) load my custom files and 3) allow jetty:run to recognize Enunciate's generated files. Below is the final configuration in my pom.xml.

All the changes described in the above section are necessary to implement OAuth if you create a project with AppFuse WS 2.1. It may seem like a lot of code, but I was able to copy/paste and get it all working in an app in under 5 minutes. Hopefully you can do the same. I'm also considering adding it by default to the next version of AppFuse. Now let's look at integrating OAuth into a client to authenticate and retrieve data from this application.

Authenticate and Retrieve Data with Client
I originally thought my GWT OAuth application would provide a nice client. However, after 30 minutes of trying to get GWT 1.7.1 and the GWT Maven plugin (1.1) working with my 64-bit Java 6 JDK on OS X, I gave up. So I opted to use the Ajax Login application I've been using in my recent security tutorials.

In this example, I used OAuth2RestTemplate from Spring Security OAuth. While this works, and works well, I'd still like to get things working with GWT (or jQuery) to demonstrate how to do it from a pure client-side perspective.

To begin, I got the latest source of Ajax Login from GitHub (as of this morning) and made some changes. First of all, I added the Spring Security OAuth dependencies to pom.xml:

At this point, I thought everything would work and I spent quite some time banging my head against the wall when it didn't. As I was composing an email to the Enunciate users mailing list, I realized the issue. It appeared to be working, but from the server side, and the redirect back to the client was not happening. The Ajax Login app uses UrlRewriteFilter (for pretty URLs) to redirect from /app/* to /$1 and this redirect was losing the code parameter in the URL.

After making all these changes, I ran mvn jetty:run on both apps and opened http://localhost:8080/appfuse/users in my browser. It all worked and a smile crept across my face. What's New in Maven 3.0 with Matthew McCullough

Last night, I attended the Denver JUG meeting to hear some excellent talks by Matthew McCullough and Tim Berglund. I took notes during Matthew's talk, but my battery ran out before Tim's talk started. Below are my notes.

Matthew started out by described the differences between Maven 2 and Maven 3. As he began, he emphasized it wasn't a beginner talk, but mostly for existing Maven users that understand how to read a pom.xml and such.

The Roadmap
Commits to Maven 3 have been happening for the last 3 years. Matthew is not an employee of Sonatype, but he mentioned their name quite a bit in his talk. Sonatype has hired several committers (7 that Matthew knows of by name) that now work on Maven 3 full-time. For compatibility with Maven 2, the project has 450 integration tests and they test it against 100s of Maven 2 projects. Maven 3 has plugin classloader partitioning and a legacy simulation layer for old plugins.

The main improvement in Maven 3 is speed. It's been performance tuned to be 50% to 400% faster. Benchmarks (guaranteed by integration tests) include better: Disk I/O, Network I/O, CPU and Memory. Another new feature is extensibility so Maven is a better library rather than just a command-line tool. Now there's a library and APIs that you can use to do the things that Maven does. Plexus has been replaced with Guice and it's now much easier to embed Maven (Polyglot Maven and Maven Shell are examples of this).

Below are a number of other changes between Maven 2 and Maven 3.

  • Syntax: pom.xml still uses <modelVersion>4.0.0</modelVersion> so it can be a drop-in replacement for Maven 2 projects.
  • Validations: poms are heavily validated against common mistakes, warns when plugin versions are not specified (use mvn validate to see issues), blocks duplicate dependencies (examined in same POM only, conflict resolution used otherwise).
  • Help URLs: wiki page URLs now shown for all error messages. One of the first Apache projects to do this.
  • Removals: profiles.xml external file support removed, Maven 1.0 repository support removed <layout>legacy</layout> (it's been 5 years since any commits to Maven 1).
  • Behavior: SNAPSHOTs always deployed with date-stamps, artifact resolution caching has been improved to do less checking (override with mvn <phase> -U).
  • Plugins: version auto-selection favors RELEASEs over SNAPSHOTs (opposite for Maven 2), versions cannot be specified as RELEASE or LATEST, plugins only resolved from <pluginRepository> locations.
  • See the Plugin Compatibility Matrix to see if your favorite plugins are compatible.

Maven 3 hopes to be a drop-in replacement for Maven 2, but non backwards-compatible changes will be happening in Maven 3.1. It's anticipated release is Q1 of 2011 and will likely contain the following features.

  • "Mixins" for direct dependencies
  • Site plugin takes over <reporting>
  • Backwards compatibility by <modelVersion
  • There's a good chance 3.1 breaks compatibility with legacy POMs

Another new thing in Maven 3 is Toolchain. Toolchain a common way to configure your JDK for multiple plugins. There are only a handful of plugins that are toolchain-enabled. User tool chain definitions are defined in ~/.m2/toolchains.xml. To use different toolchains (JDKs), you specify a vendor and version as part of your plugin configuration.

Maven Shell is a high performance console that's a Maven 3 add-on. It's hosted at GitHub to make community contributions easier. It goes on your command line and it offers syntax highlighting and context-sensitive help (by typing ? at the command prompt).

Another major improvement in Maven 3 is Polyglot Maven. Tools like Gant and Buildr have made Maven look ancient, but they've also given it a good challenge. Maven 3 is likely to leapfrog these tools because of its ability to use different languages for your build configuration. Currently, 6 languages are supported. Polyglot Maven is a super-set distribution of Maven 3. It's not shipped with Maven 3 core because it contains all the other language implementations and is quite large. Polyglot Maven also contains a translate tool that allows you to convert any-to-any language. It has a DSL framework with Macros and Lifecycle Hooks. Macros allows for more concise syntax.

After talking about Polyglot Maven a bit, Matthew shows us a demo translating pom.xml to pom.yaml and then running the build. After that, he showed us examples of what a pom looks like when defined in Clojure, Scala and Groovy. Someone asked about file parsing performance and Matthew said different languages would cause a single-digit performance difference as part of your build process. Personally, I can't help but think any non-XML parser would be faster than the XML parser.

In regards to m2eclipse, a new drop (0.10) occurred a few weeks ago and it's one of the highest quality releases to date. It has major refactoring and many performance improvements.

I very much enjoyed Matthew's talk, both because of his presentation techniques and because he had a lot of good information. While I've tried Maven 3 and Shell in the past, I've been newly inspired to start using them again on a daily basis.

Tim's talk on Decision Making was also excellent. The biggest things I learned were that conflict is good (idea-wise, not personal) and things to look out for between teams (fault lines). Hopefully both Tim and Matthew post their slides so I can link to them here.

What's Happening in the Java World?

This morning at TheServerSide Java Symposium I attended James Gosling's keynote. Below are my notes from his talk.

The unifying principle for Java is the Network - it ties everything together. Enterprise, Desktop, Web, Mobile, HPC, Media and Embedded. The most important thing in the Java world is the acquisition of Sun by Oracle. James is showing a slide of Duke in a fish tank with a "Snorcle!" title above it.

Obligatory statistics for Java:

  • 15 million JRE downloads/week (doesn't count tax season in Brazil)
  • 10 billion-ish Java enabled devices (more devices than people)
  • 1 billion-ish Java enabled desktops
  • 100 million-ish TV devices
  • 2.6 billion-ish mobile devices
  • 5.5 billion-ish smart cards
  • 6.5 million professional Java developers

Java has become "Learn Once, Work Anywhere". Most college students worldwide have taken a Java course in school. James' daughter is in college but isn't interested in Java, mostly because her dad's name is all over the textbooks.

Java EE 6 was approved September 30, 2009. It was many years in the making; the result of large-scale community collaboration. It was built by hardware manufacturers, users, developers and academia. Because of all the politics involved, many engineers had to become diplomats. Most software engineers are from the wrong Myers-Brigg quadrant for this type of negotiation. Needless to say, the process was interesting.

New and Updated APIs in Java EE 6: Servlet 3.0, JAX-RS 1.1, Bean Validation 1.0, DI 1.0, CDI 1.0, Managed Beans 1.0, JASPIC 1.1, EJB 3.1, JPA 2.0 and many others. Also new is the Web Profile. It's the first Java EE profile to be defined. It's a fully-functional, mid-size stack for modern web application development. It's complete, but not the kitchen sink. It's what most people use when building a modern web application in Java.

Java EE 6 adds dependency injection with DI (JSR-330) and CDI (JSR-299). @Resource is still around, but an @Inject annotation has been added for typesafe injection. It has automatic scope management (request, session, etc.) and is extensible via a BeanManager API.

GlassFish is the world's most downloaded app server (1 million-ish downloads/month). GFv2 was the EE 5 reference implementation. GFv3 is the reference implementation for EE 6. But it's not just a reference implementation, it's a benchmark-winning mission-critical large-scale app server. The FCS was released on December 10, 2009.

Goals of Java EE: ease of use, right-sizing and extensibility. Now Roberto Chinnici (EE 6 spec lead) and another guy are on stage showing a NetBeans and GlassFish demo. With Servlet 3.0, you don't need a web.xml file, you just need a WEB-INF directory. There's a new @WebServlet annotation that lets you specify a "urlPattern" value for the servlet-mapping. A new @EJB annotation allows you to easily inject EJBs into your servlet. Roberto wired in an EJB, hit Ctrl+S and refreshed his browser and it all worked immediately. In the background, NetBeans and GlassFish did the redeployment and initialized the EJB container in milliseconds.

@ManagedBeans and @SessionScope and @Named are all part of CDI. When using @Named, the beans become available to JSTL and you can access them using ${beanName.property}. Interestingly, the CDI annotations are in difference packages: javax.annotation.ManagedBean and javax.enterprise.context.RequestScoped.

As David Geary mentions, it's great to see the influence that Ruby on Rails has had on Java EE.

Now Roberto is showing us the admin console of GlassFish and how modular it is. He's installing a JMS module, but it's interesting to see that there's a Ruby Container installed by default. Apache Felix is the underlying OSGI implementation used by GlassFish. You can telnet into it and see the status of all the bundles installed. After installing the full-profile, Roberto shows that you can restart the server from the console.

Isn't the whole point of OSGI that you don't have to restart anything!?

The GlassFish management console is definitely impressive and visually appealing. Apparently, it's extensible too, so you could easily write plugins to monitor your application and provide memory statistics.

Changing topics, one of the things that nice about Java is its a two-level spec. The important thing in the Java world isn't the language, it's the virtual machine. The magic is in the VM! Scala, Ruby/Rails, Groovy/Grails, Python, PHP, JavaScript, JavaFX and many others. In the same breath of talking about Java.next languages, James mentioned JavaFX Script. It's a new declarative scripting language for GUIs. It's similar to Flash or Silverlight, but it's much better because it has the Java VM under it.

At the current rate that we're going with CPUs and cores, there's a good chance we'll have 5220 cores on our desktops by 2030. If you find the concurrency libraries scary, get over it.

For the rest of talk, James talked about what he's hacking on these days. He's helping build an Audi TTS for the Pikes Peak Road Rally in Colorado. The goal is to figure out a way to keep the vehicle above 130 MPH for the whole race. Sounds like a pretty cool project to me.

I don't think there was a whole lot of new information covered in James' talk, but I really do like Java EE 6's Web Profile. However, I think it's something most of the community has been using for many years with Tomcat + Spring + Hibernate. Now it's simply been standardized. If you happen to work at one of those companies that frowns on open source and smiles at standards, you've finally caught up with the rest of us. ;-)
